Recently I was asked how I begin a scrapbook page ... is it the pictures that come first or is it the layout? In all honesty, it depends. Let's look at this page I just finished, for example ...
Paper: Cardstock - Chocolate Chip, Really Rust, More Mustard; Designer Series Paper - Autumn Vine (Retired)
Ink: Craft - Chocolate Chip
Tools & Accessories: On Board Loads of Letters; Hobby Blade; Sanding Blocks; Sponge Dauber; Clear Buttons; Natural Hemp Twine; Punches - 1" Circle, Tag Corner; Clips; Chocolate Chip Stampin' Write Marker; Mini Glue Dots; Mono Multi Liquid Glue; SNAIL
I knew as soon as I took these photographs of our dog, Buddy, I had to scrap them. To get my creative juices flowing, I browsed through my copy of Scrapbook page maps : sketches for creative layouts by Becky Fleck and found a sketch for a vertical 8-1/2" x 11" page with a single photo which became my layout inspiration, though I adapted it to a 12" x 12" page with two photos. Just as the artist did in the sketch, I used chipboard letters while substituting an embellishment for the letter "O;" in this case, a clear button. I also used patterned paper with a torn edge at the top (doesn't the pattern remind you a little of paw prints?), but that's where the similarity ends. The layered tag clipped to the patterned paper seemed like the perfect way to add journaling to complete the page.
So in this case, the pictures came first. But at other times, I've been known to begin the foundation for a page with no photographs in mind at all, only to add them, and a few additional embellishments, later; usually this is when I'm creating layouts for a class/camp or to help a customer with their own scrapping using a particular product they've just purchased, such as a Simply Scrappin' Kit or Designer Series Paper. And sometimes I see a scrapbook page that I just have to duplicate, so I dig through my pictures to find ones that fit.
When it comes to scrapbooking, there really isn't one, right approach. It's whatever works for you. I encourage you to comment on this post with your thoughts about your own approach. I'd love to hear from you. Then just let yourself go and enjoy National Scrapbooking Month by scrapbooking your own special photographs. You'll be glad you did.
